About us

Sitike is an apache word meaning a group of non-blood kin who are present in a time of crisis.

Our Mission

Our mission is to provide community-based counseling and education in a safe and healing environment that embraces the cultural and emotional needs of every client and to help people find hope, resiliency and life-affirming change.

Our Vision

Our vision is a community where diversity, compassion, healing and growth are encouraged, valued and celebrated. The devastating effects of substance abuse, mental illness and violence are diminished. Relationships, families and children thrive.

Our History

Sitike Counseling Center (“Sitike”) opened its doors in 1988 – born of a passionate commitment to offer hope and healing to people whose lives are affected by addiction, violence, and mental illness. Originally founded by Kathleen DesMaisons, the author of “Potates Not Prozac,” Sitike’s early years were dedicated to exploring the role nutrition played in the addiction and recovery process. Following Ms. DesMaisons departure in 1993, the agency pivoted and embraced more traditional treatment modalities including harm reduction, motivational interviewing, dialectical behavioral therapy, cognitive behavioral therapy, WRAP, and relapse prevention. Recognizing that substance abuse, mental health challenges, and domestic violence problems are highly correlated and bidirectional in nature, Sitike began to expand programming to include integrated mental health support and and violence prevention services. Through comprehensive treatment and recovery services, people who experience addiction, mental health disorders, and persons who cause harm can enter recovery, restore their physical and mental health, repair relationships and lead full, joyful lives.
